Many companies out their advertise package plans for fertilizing your lawn saying you will have a greener lawn. This could be true to a degree if they know what they are doing, but fertilizing to early can actually damage your grass roots. Your grass really only needs fertilizer twice a year, once in may and again in late fall.

When your grass is just starting to turn green in early spring, the root system is trying to go deeper into the ground. This is what gives you a firm lawn. Your lawn is like your garden, good soil produces good results. When fertilized to early, the top half of the grass looks great but the root system is trying to come upward due to the fertilizer. One result from using fertilizer to early would be a yard that dies off in the summer to early. Treating your soil first or maybe treating the crabgrass early will be produce the better long term results.

Fertilizing in the Winter

Late fall or early winter are the best times to fertilize cool season grasses. Since the majority of the lawns in North America are made from these grasses, like Bermuda and bluegrass, it is a good bet your yard has a typical cool season blend.

Before the first freeze, give your lawn a thorough fertilizing to replace all of the nutrients that can be lost from the soil during the hot summer months. Once the weather turns cold, the fertilizer will remain in the soil and feed your lawn’s roots all winter long.

How our Treatment Works:

The insecticide moves down through the soil, where it is absorbed by the roots. Once absorbed, it moves up through the tree or shrub providing year-long insect protection. The treatment even moves into new growth after application, thus protecting it, too! To get complete protection, the insecticide must distribute completely through the tree/shrub. Depending on the size and health of the plant, this may take one week to three months (for very large trees). Rain or water cannot wash off this internal protection.

What will aeration do for my lawn?

As lawns age or sustain heavy use from play, sports activities, pets, vehicle traffic and parking, soil compaction can result. Soil compacting forces are most severe in poorly drained or wet sites. Compaction greatly reduces the pore space within the soil that would normally hold air. Roots require oxygen to grow and absorb nutrients and water. Compaction reduces total pore space and the amount of air within the soil. It has a negative impact on nutrient uptake and water infiltration, in addition to being a physical barrier to root growth. This results in poor top growth and lawn deterioration. Core aeration can benefit your lawn by:

Increasing the activity of soil microorganisms that decompose thatch.
Increasing water, nutrient and oxygen movement into the soil.
Improving rooting.
Enhancing infiltration of rainfall or irrigation.
Helping prevent fertilizer and pesticide run-off from overly compacted areas.
